WRA is a state corporation established under Section 11 of the Water Act, 2016. Pursuant to Section 6 of the Act which came in to effect on 21st April, 2017 vide Legal Notice No. 59, the Authority is an Agent of the National Government responsible for regulating the management and use of water resources. The Water Act, 2016 makes extensive provisions on the Authority’s role in regulating the use and management of water resources.
WRA was operationalized vide Legal Notice No. 60 on 21st of April, 2017. However, the Authority has been in existence for 12 years following its establishment under the Water Act, 2002 as Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA).
